Snapchat Account Hacked or Compromised? How to Recover It

Last updated: October 2026

Snapchat hacks are disorienting — one day your streaks and memories are yours, the next someone else is messaging your friends as you. Snapchat's recovery process is real but thin: they publish no official proof-of-ownership ranking, so recovery comes down to whether their records match what you tell them. Here's the exact path, plus the honest truth about locked accounts.

Know this up front Snapchat does not publish an ownership-proof ranking like gaming platforms do. The support form asks for your username, email address, mobile number, and a detailed incident description — and recovery appears to depend on their records matching. Be accurate. And: Snapchat will never ask you for money to unlock an account, and there is no phone support — any number claiming to be Snapchat support is a scam.

Step 1: Try "Forgot your password?"

If the hacker hasn't changed the email or phone on the account, you can reset immediately: open the login screen, tap "Forgot your password?", and reset via the email or phone on file (the password reset page works from a browser too). Set a new password and you're back in. Then jump to the lockdown section below.

Step 2: File the compromised-account support request

If you're locked out, the official path is Snapchat's compromised-account form:

  1. Go to the Snapchat support site: support.snapchat.com/i-need-help and choose "My Account Is Compromised." A "Submit a Request" form appears.
  2. Select "I Can't Access My Account", then "I Think My Account Was Compromised."
  3. Fill in your username, email address, and mobile number, plus a detailed description: when you lost access, what changed, what you've already tried. The more of these match Snapchat's records, the better.
  4. Submit — and submit only once. Repeated requests with conflicting information slow recovery rather than speeding it up.

This video walks through what you can try when you've lost access to your recovery email or phone — including contacting Snapchat Support with the details that help establish ownership:

Step 3: If the account is locked

Snapchat sometimes flags suspected compromises with a temporary lock. This is a different path from a hijacked account:

  1. Remove all third-party apps and plugins first. Unauthorized add-ons are a common cause of locks — and of the compromise itself.
  2. Log in via the web or the app and choose Unlock.
  3. If it doesn't work, wait 48 hours before retrying. Hammering it doesn't help.

The permanent-lock situation

If the account is permanently locked, you can still appeal via Support > Contact Us > login issue, explaining that you were hacked. But here's the hard truth: Snapchat states permanently locked accounts may not be recoverable, and support may refuse — even when the lock was caused by the hacker, not by you. File the appeal, be factual, but understand this is the one outcome where you may genuinely lose the account.

Honest timelines

Once you're back in: the full lockdown

  1. Go to Settings > Connected Apps and revoke anything suspicious or unfamiliar.
  2. Enable two-factor authentication.
  3. Never use unauthorized add-ons or plugins — they're both a lock risk and a theft vector.
  4. Change your password to something unique and strong.
  5. Check your memories, contacts, and settings for anything the attacker changed.
