Fortnite / Epic Games Recovery Guide
Fortnite Account Hacked and the Email Changed
Last updated: October 2026
Epic Games runs account recovery differently from everyone else: a single official form, a decision inside 48 hours, and no way to add proof after you've submitted. That makes preparation the whole battle. Here's how to file it once and file it right.
Step 0: Secure your email first
Epic calls the account email "the key" to the Epic account — and it's right. If the email address itself (your Gmail, Outlook, whatever you use) is compromised, recover that first with your email provider and turn on its two-step verification. Submitting a recovery request while the hacker reads your inbox is building on sand. If the email was only changed inside Epic while your actual mailbox is safe, move straight to the form below.
Step 1: Test the doors that might still be open
- Password reset: on the sign-in page, "Trouble signing in?" sends a reset — but only to the email currently on the account. If the hacker changed it, the reset goes to them. Dead end; move on.
- Linked platform sign-in: try signing in through a linked PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Facebook, or Google account. This sometimes gets you in the door — but read the warning below before you celebrate.
Step 2: Gather everything — the form doesn't forgive
Epic's recovery form is one-shot: once submitted, you cannot add information. So build the file first:
- Epic account ID (if you can find it from any past sign-in, email, or linked account page).
- Purchase invoice / transaction IDs — V-Bucks, games, anything bought through Epic. Your strongest proof.
- Every email address and display name the account has ever used.
- The name and country given when the account was created.
- The phone number used for 2FA, if you had it on.
- Linked consoles and accounts — PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Facebook, Google.
- Payment methods used on the account.
Step 3: Submit the recovery request
- Go to epicgames.com/help → Account → "Recover your account".
- Fill in everything from your proof file. Complete beats quick — you don't get a second pass at this form.
- Submit, then watch your email for the confirmation: "Your Epic account recovery request" — it carries a status link.
- Epic states you'll get an outcome within 48 hours, or a notice that it needs more time.
Step 4: When it's back, rebuild the walls
- Reset the password to something strong and unique.
- Re-enable 2FA.
- Re-link your platform accounts, and review what's linked — report any linked account you don't recognize through a support ticket.
- Confirm the email on the account is yours and only yours.
Questions people actually ask
How long does Epic account recovery take?
Epic states the outcome comes within 48 hours of your request, or it tells you it needs more time. You'll get a confirmation email with a status link when you submit.
I can sign in with my PlayStation account. Is my Fortnite account recovered?
No. If the email on the Epic account was changed, the account is still compromised — the hacker's email is still the recovery address. Console sign-in is a way in, not a fix. File the official recovery request.
What proof does Epic want?
Invoice or transaction IDs and your Epic account ID carry the most weight, backed by every email and display name you've used, the name and country from sign-up, your 2FA phone, linked consoles, and payment methods.
I submitted the form but forgot something important. Can I add it?
No — the recovery form cannot be amended after submission, which is why gathering everything first matters so much. If your request is denied for missing proof, your follow-up goes through Epic support with the complete file.
